The ACDS Early Intervention (birth to three years old) and Preschool programs (three to five years old) are designed to meet the needs of children with a diversity of developmental and learning challenges including Down syndrome and other genetic conditions, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, speech and communication delays, neuromuscular disorders, sensory processing dysfunction, and visual and auditory impairments.

Programs are individualized to meet the specific needs of the child and allow for continuity of educational/therapeutic service provision from Home and Clinic based in early intervention through preschool following the child’s Individualized Educational Plan (Preschool) and the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (Early Intervention).

Our Home based program and early intervention Clinic and Preschool programs provide Speech, Audiology, Occupational and Physical Therapy and Applied Behavior Analysis (the methodology used for children on the Autistic Spectrum). In addition, parent training, support groups, and workshops are also available to our families. Evaluations, both Early Intervention and Transition to CPSE, are offered at ACDS. SEIT services are also provided. Bilingual services assist our families in both Early Intervention and Preschool.

Our Early Intervention Home Based program is an integral part of our service delivery system. Evaluations, home and community therapeutic services are provided in various settings that include; a child’s home, a caregiver’s home or day care. Ongoing Service Coordinator’s at ACDS are available to guide the families through the Early Intervention process.

ACDS is truly a collaborative learning community; teachers, therapists and families working together to promote learning, social and emotional growth. The educational and therapeutic staff is highly trained in designing developmentally appropriate interventions with young children and does so with nurturance, encouragement and positive support.

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT ACDS EARLY INTERVENTION SERVICES (CENTER BASED)

August 21st, 2020 - NY State has announced that center based early intervention at ACDS will not open in September. On June 18, 2020 the New York State Department of Health issued guidance that “EI Group Services” (that is, our center-based program) were not authorized to reopen. Last Friday, August 14, they reiterated that position. As a result, we will not be opening the three Early Intervention classes we had planned for when preschool reopens on September 8. The position of State DOH puts the future of our center-based EI program in jeopardy.

Extensive research attests to the immense benefits EI extends to children and families – benefits that persist throughout the child’s life.  We will do everything in our power to ensure that infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities have the resources and services they need to thrive.

In that spirit, ACDS would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Jane Shimkin director of Early Intervention services at ACDS. Jane’s vision, passion, and commitment have allowed center based EI at ACDS to flourish far beyond where many peer programs have closed. No one has fought harder than Jane for EI and her tenacity and vision have led us to our new plan to ensure that the needs of infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities are met. We will be working to launch an Early Intervention Clinic at our Fern Place location. We will be sharing details about this Clinic as it develops.

If you have questions about the clinic or other aspects of our EI policy, please feel free to reach out to Jane Shimkin.
