From
the desk of Michael Smith, Executive Director
- Winter 2007
ACDS has begun the 2007-2008 school and fiscal year in a very positive fashion.
- We have been approved by NY State to open two new group homes and our first transitional apartment for adults. The first of these will open in early 2008 and, when all completed, will increase our residential capacity to 49.
- We ran our first summer camp in Garrison, N.Y. for 33 campers and look forward to expanding the program in 2008.
- Medicaid Service Coordination has grown in just two years to serving over 50 young adults.
- We have hired Leslie Granger as our new Director of Development and we look forward to many new initiatives to support our growth and services.
- We have opened the Power Play Sensory Motor Gym with two full-time therapists. It is open six days a week.
- ACDS has begun planning for our own school and headquarters building. Architectural renderings can be viewed by clicking here! You will hear much more about this exciting project in the months to come.
- ACDS has completed its third successive year of profitable operations For FY2008 we project revenues of over $11,000,000 (up from $6.5M in three short years). We currently have 230 employees.
- At the request of Nassau County and local school districts we have begun providing ABA services to children in the autistic spectrum.
- With all these initiatives we have not lost sight of our heritage and mission. Each year children with Down syndrome make up 55-60% of our school population. We are expanding our outreach to new parents, hospitals, pediatricians and obgyns to reach all families who may need to access our services.
- We have begun reorganizing our Board of Directors to help us carry out our mission going forward. Our thanks go out to Craig Lomma who stepped down in October as Board President after many years of dedicated service. Congratulations to Tim Michel our new Board President who recently chaired our very successful 40th Anniversary Dinner Dance.
